Report: Cam Newton Is Asymptomatic; What That Means For Patriots

New England Patriots veteran quarterback Cam Newton tested positive for coronavirus and fans have started asking questions about his role with the Patriots.

Newton feels well two days after his test results returned positive. The 2015 NFL MVP won’t join the team in Monday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs despite the fact that he is doesn’t have any symptoms. Jay Glazer from FOX Sports confirmed the information.

Newton will probably miss at least five days. If he was symptomatic, he would miss at least 10 days and be out of the game against the Denver Broncos.

Here’s what the official NFL protocols note:

“— Asymptomatic players can be reactivated once 10 days have passed since the initial positive test OR five days have passed since the initial positive test AND the player returns two consecutive negative PCR virus tests separated by 24 hours.

“— Symptomatic players cannot return until at least 10 days have passed since the first COVID symptoms appeared AND at least 72 hours have passed since symptoms last occurred.”

Cam Newton is crucial for the Patriots

If the Patriots quarterback remains asymptomatic, gets two consecutive negative PCR virus tests, and the team doctor clears him, he can join his teammates on Thursday.

According to initial reports, veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer will step in as starting quarterback for the Patriots. New England is traveling to Kansas City to confront the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

Newton has a huge role with the team, and his running game really helped the team in the first three games of the regular season. The quarterback brought a pretty different skill set to New England and Josh McDaniels has a chance to try a different plan on the field. The Patriots need Newton, but some analysts believe that this is a great opportunity for Jarrett Stidham. Some have even predicted that the second-year quarterback would follow Tom Brady’s footsteps and become the new leader of the Patriots. Brady got a similar chance at the beginning of his time with the Patriots and the rest is history.
