Coach Bill Belichick Makes Surprising Acknowledgement About Patriots’ Defense

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick discussed the team’s defensive plays following the big win over the Arizona Cardinals and made a big acknowledgment. His team beat the Cardinals, and coach Belichick revealed that his son Steve is the Patriots defensive play-caller. Media members asked Belichick about the adjustment his team made on edge containment. NFL analysts sort of realized that Steve was actually calling defensive plays for the team.

His legendary dad talked about this and the team’s performance in Week 12.

“Yeah, you identified a definite problem that came up early in the game,” Belichick said. “Kliff (Kingsbury) does a real good job of that. He does a good job of creating conflicts for the defense, putting the defense in tough spots. He did that.

“They got the ball outside, they hurt us with some outside runs, a variety of them. It was a challenge the whole game. But we played them a little better as the game went on. Steve made a couple good calls that put us in the right defense against a couple of those, as well. That was good, too.”

Bill Belichick confirms his acknowledgement

Defensive coordinators call plays. New England hasn’t named a defensive coordinator since Matt Patricia joined the Detroit Lions as a head coach following the 2017 season. Brian Flores was calling defensive plays as linebackers coach in 2018 and then joined the Miami Dolphins as their head coach. We can’t really ignore the fact that Patricia was fired yesterday.

Head coach Belichick didn’t really reveal much about the defensive play-calling. He addressed the situation for the first time.

Steve moved from safeties to outside linebackers in 2020. It looks like he has “taken on more of an all-encompassing role based on what players have said about the head coach’s oldest son.”

Brian is coaching Patriots safeties this season. Belichick’s sons have received all the good genes from their dad. They do really great job on the field, and we believe the best is yet to come. Belichick is the best coach in league history and we can’t ignore his success.
