New England Patriots Veteran Expected to Retire
The New England Patriots had too many players opting-out of the regular season due to coronavirus concerns. According to the most recent reports, one of the best players on the roster may retire. The Patriots will probably lose the veteran who plans to retire.
Miguel Bezan aka Pats Cap is an expert in NFL financials. His main focus is on the New England Patriots. Bezan is working on the Patriots cap situation day and night, and he keeps his followers updated on any potential move.
Bezan is more than convinced that the Patriots will lose veteran offensive tackle Marcus Cannon to retirement.
Patriots veteran Marcus Cannon to retire, opening a roster spot
Cannon opted-out of the regular season due to coronavirus safety concerns. He is 32, and has won three Super Bowls. Cannon is also a cancer survivor, and this played a big role in his decision to stay out of the field this season. Cannon’s retirement won’t come as a surprise to many fans, and Bezan took into consideration his age, experience, success, and medical history.
Cannon’s play has seen a decline. NFL analysts noticed this decline in the 2016 season. He was the sixth-highest-rated offensive tackle in the league. In 2019, he was 36th.
Rookie Michael Onwenu was brilliant on the field and he will probably replace Cannon. Jermaine Eluemunor began the regular season as starting right tackle, but Onwenu did better.
Adam Weinrib of MusketFire.com discussed New England’s draft-day steal.
“It’s been tough to defend the team’s drafting this season in particular since the lack of depth has been so glaring in all facets. The offense has been led by UDFAs like Jakobi Meyers, and high-profile defenders (supposedly) like Josh Uche and Anfernee Jennings have barely cracked the rotation. The Onwenu pick doesn’t show up on the highlight reels (unless you’re looking extremely hard and are a very pedantic person!), but the Patriots have secured the services of one of the top five guards in the game, and the maneuver was about as unheralded as it gets.”
Cannon may be interested in returning to the field. However, the Patriots can easily release him so he can find a starting spot in another NFL team. Onwenu may go back and replace Joe Thuney.
Everything points to the fact that Cannon won’t return to the field.
