Report: Lakers’ JaVale McGee to Exercise Player Option For 2020-21

The Los Angeles Lakers were prepared for the upcoming season, and they were also prepared to lose some of the veterans. This includes Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Rajon Rondo, and JaVale McGee. Many thought that JaVale McGee would test the open market and look for a better contract, but he is staying with the Lakers in the 2020-21 season.

McGee won a title with the 2019-20 Lakers team and he would love to do the same again. His decision to exercise his player option for the season is the best sign of that.

This is more than great news for the Lakers fanbase. McGee’s departure was never considered a problem for the team. However, his decision will give the Lakers solid continuity in the frontcourt.

JaVale McGee to have similar role in 2020-21

Anthony Davis was the most important big man on the Lakers roster. This doesn’t change the fact that McGee played a big role in the rotation this past season.

In the 2019-20 season, McGee was averaging 6.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game with the Lakers. The veteran was a big body down low and joined the starting lineup in every game he played.

Analysts believe that McGee will have similar role in 2020-21.

The Lakers will do their best to boost their roster. McGee and his teammates have a big chance to make the NBA Finals again. LeBron James will be leading the way for the Lakers and his experience and skills will give the team a better chance to win a title.

Los Angeles added Dennis Schroder to the roster and undrafted free agent Zavier Simpson. The latter played college basketball at Michigan and was part of the Wolverines for four years. Simpson was averaging over 33 minutes per game the last two years. In his senior campaign, Simpson had 12.9 points and 7.9 assists per game with the team and ranked third.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka will soon make a few more moves, and the team will probably add a few valuable players this offseason. LA has a chance to win a title again
