Cam Newton Reacts To Bill Belichick’s Defense Of Costly Interception

The New England Patriots are coming off a terrible loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Patriots players returned home after suffering a 24-3 loss. Most NFL analysts are focused on veteran quarterback Cam Newton and his interception in Week 14.

New England had just forced a takeaway when defensive back Myles Bryant “pried” the football away from LA wide receiver Robert Woods. It didn’t end here and two plays later, LA intercepted Newton’s pass and carried it all the way to the house.

Belichick defends Cam Newton following an interception

Head coach Belichick defended the pass Newton delivered. Why the signal-caller would have thrown the football away? The 2015 NFL MVP threw the ball where he planned to see Harris. LA defensive tackle Aaron Donald held up Harris. He didn’t let him get to the point he was expected to reach.

Newton appeared on WEEI to talk about his head coach and the way he defended his pass.

“I mean, it’s the truth,” Newton said. “It’s not, like, defending. My job is to do everything that the coaches are telling me to do, and that’s what I do. Contrary to whatever is being said, whatever is being analyzed, I try my best to to to put on as best of a performance that I could possibly go out and do each and every play.”

Belichick did his thing, and his comments didn’t sit well with some fans.

“Whether it’s deciding to throw, whether it’s deciding to run, whether it’s deciding just to make the smart decisions, that’s what I’m coached to do, and that’s what I’m going to continue to do. So no matter what Coach Bill says, and I appreciate him deeply, but at the same time I’m just doing what I’m asked to do, and trying to execute to the best I know how.”

Newton provides a detailed answer

The Patriots quarterback used the follow-up question to talk about the situation.

“Yeah, so on that particular play Dame was, in essence, trying to entice the rush, so to speak,” Newton said. “So, you want to bring the rush to you, so you can throw behind them. And in that particular play, I was anticipating Dame to kind of come free in the latter part, but that didn’t happen and obviously, he got held up. The defender behind him caught it.

“When you start playing this game second-guessing yourself or you start playing this game too conservative, that’s when mistakes happen. So, for me in my vantage point, I was trying to anticipate something and throw it before he was actually open knowing he was going to be open, but he never got open. So, that’s the theory.”

Newton’s future with the Patriots is hanging in the air right now. New England offered him a deal, hoping to get the best of him. But he struggled with inconsistency throughout the entire season. He was brilliant in one game and then went on spoiling the next one.
