Injury Diagnosis In For Patriots Cornerback Stephon Gilmore

The New England Patriots sit well outside the playoff picture. The team suffered a 22-12 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Head coach Bill Belichick and his team will miss the playoffs for the first time in 12 years. It’s a terrible development for the champions, but players have to get used to this. As if this wasn’t enough, the team lost several key players to injuries. Veteran wideout Julian Edelman had to undergo surgery to fix his knee issue. He missed a big portion of the season and has yet to return to the field. Edelman is not the only veteran New England lost to injury. Several sources have confirmed the injury diagnosis of veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

Gilmore left Sunday’s game against the Dolphins due to a knee issue. According to most recent reports, Gilmore suffered a partially torn quad. Ian Rapoport from the NFL Newtork confirmed the information. He reported that the veteran cornerback will undergo a surgery to fix his quad on Tuesday. In other words, Gilmore won’t return in the next couple of weeks.

This is actually good news. Many thought that Gilmore would miss a lot of time on the field. His injury is less severe than what it first looked like. The veteran suffered his injury in a third-and-6 play with 3:28 left to play in the second quarter of the game. Gilmore fell awkwardly and grabbed his leg. He needed assistance to make the blue tent and the locker room.

Optimistic injury diagnosis for Stephon Gilmore

Rapoport reports that there’s no structural damage to Gilmore’s knee. His quad will heal before the start of the next season. He may even take part in some of the offseason activities.

Gilmore has just finished his fourth season with the team. He has been a key contributor for the team. In 2019, Gilmore was the best defensive player in the NFL. He totaled league-leading 20 passes defended and six interceptions. In 2020, Gilmore’s numbers saw a slight drop but he continued playing his elite football.

The cornerback has been part of many trade rumors. Will New England keep him around in the next few seasons?
