LeBron James’ Extension With LA Not Related to Anthony Davis’ Decision

LeBron James surprised everyone with his unannounced decision to sign a contract extension with the LA Lakers. The four-time NBA champion signed a two-year deal worth $85 million. It was a surprising move, and experts didn’t really expect to hear any form of news related to LeBron. Most of them were focused on Anthony Davis and his contract with the team. Davis is an unrestricted free agent and has yet to sign a deal with the Lakers.

Is there really a connection between LeBron’s extension and Davis’ future with the team? Rich Paul from Klutch Sports represents both superstars. However, Davis’ decision has nothing to do with LeBron’s extension with the team. It’s obvious that LeBron was looking for some sort of security with the team. He will soon turn 36. When it comes to Davis, he has every right to make whatever decision fits his criteria.

LeBron signs an extension with LA to secure his future

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has more on this.

“As for Anthony Davis, sources said, he is still weighing how to structure his contract as he tries to gauge how the salary cap will grow in the next few years. Davis has been looking at spreadsheets trying to best guess how to plan the contracts for the rest of his career beyond this deal he’s soon to sign. His decision-making is independent of LeBron James’, though they share agent Rich Paul, and now that James is locked into an extension.”

Everything points to the fact that Davis will re-sign with the Lakers. He is just trying to get the deal that makes most sense for him.

LeBron and Davis won the championship in Orlando. Davis was averaging 27.7 points and 9.7 rebounds in the 2020 playoffs. The Lakers met the Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets, and Miami Heat in the postseason. LeBron was averaging 27.6, 10.8 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game with the team.

Some said that Davis was waiting for Giannis Antetokounmpo to sign his deal with the Milwaukee Bucks. If Giannis doesn’t sign a max extension, he will hit free agency in 2021. If this happens, LeBron and Davis can bring him to LA.
