Los Angeles Lakers Aiming For Young Star to Pair With Anthony Davis

The Los Angeles Lakers kept themselves really busy this offseason. General Manager Rob Pelinka brought valuable players in the team. But, it looks like the reigning champions won’t stop here. The Lakers are probably looking for a young star to pair with the big man. Anthony Davis has yet to sign his deal with the team.

The team makes great plans on the future, and the front office has to think about the eventual transition from LeBron James.

LA Lakers to go after a young star next offseason

Ramona Shelburne from ESPN talked about this during the Mason and Ireland Show. According to her, Kawhi Leonard or Paul George may be on the Lakers’ future list. Both superstars may become unrestricted free agents if they decide to decline their player options for the 2021-22 season.

“[The Lakers] have positioned themselves to have cap space next year. And Giannis is not the only potential free agent,” Shelburne said. “I don’t know, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George. Here’s what I think when you look at the Lakers’ long-term plans.

“If you were the Lakers and you were team-building, you would look at Anthony Davis as the next start to build around. It’s nice for him to have LeBron this year and next year, but he needs a younger star to play with going forward. Whether it’s this summer or the summer after that, you have to put yourself in a position either by trade or free agency to acquire a younger star to pair with Anthony Davis so the handoff from LeBron to AD is seamless.”

Davis has yet to sign his big deal with the Lakers. Everything points to the fact that he will return to the team and help the Lakers win back-to-back titles. Some fans were worried about his future, mostly because Davis hasn’t made an official decision.

He probably has a good reason to do this. Davis may be waiting to see how will things go throughout the NBA. Brad Turner of The Los Angeles Lakers reported that Davis will meet with the front office on Tuesday. He may sign a two-year deal with a player option for the 2021-22 season. If he signs this type of contract, he will be able to hit free agency at the same time as LeBron.
