Peter King Believes Patriots Should Acquire This Veteran QB

Veteran quarterback Cam Newton signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots, and his deal ends this offseason. There have been so many questions related to the Patriots and their next QB. Some experts aren’t really convinced that head coach Bill Belichick will keep Newton under center. This comes following all the mistakes Newton made throughout the season. He struggled with inconsistency, and Belichick didn’t trust his other options enough to give them a chance.

New England has shown no interest in using 2019 third-rounder Jarrett Stidham as a starting quarterback. Brian Hoyer is also out of the game.

Patriots to get a veteran QB

NBC Sports’ Mike Florio and Peter King discussed the quarterback options New England has right now. According to King, Matthew Stafford is a good fit for the Patriots. Of course, there are several issues related to logistics, and this may block his potential negotiations with the Patriots.

“That’s an interesting one because Matthew Stafford’s probably got five good years left. Bill Belichick’s probably got five good years left,” King said. “So, that would actually make some sense to me. But again, the problem is the money you got to pay him. Do the Patriots want to pay a quarterback 20 percent of their salary cap? I just don’t think so.”

Stafford is worth every dollar he gets. But, Belichick may not be interested in paying that much money. New England has too many problems with the receiving unit. Stafford works best as a downfield passer. Patriots lack receiving threats on the roster.

From what we can see, New England may go after another name. They may also select a quarterback in the upcoming draft. They can also use some of the veterans from King’s list. For now, Belichick is focused on the upcoming game. This doesn’t change the fact that he has already made some calculations regarding the upcoming season.

Patriots players are in the end of a terrible season, and most experts got used to the idea of not seeing them in the playoffs. But, impossible is nothing, and Belichick can sure give us a last-minute surprise.
