Report: Bill Belichick Could Have a Former No.1 Pick as his Next Starting QB

NFL experts analyzed the New England Patriots and their performance in the regular season. Let’s just say that the team doesn’t have the best season and players are already out of the playoff run. Head coach Bill Belichick will have to make a decision regarding his starting QB. Will he keep veteran Cam Newton on the roster?

Newton had a good start. He played well in the first three weeks. But, things changed a lot in the past few weeks. Newton had COVID-19 and this affected his performance. His passing game wasn’t that good and the Patriots’ offensive game was bad, too. Newton threw on five touchdown passes to 10 interceptions and has a 78.9 passer rating in 12 games with the Patriots. The 2015 NFL MVP didn’t eclipse 200 passing more than three times and went without  a touchdown pass in seven games.

This doesn’t change the fact that Newton has great running game. He has 451 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns. He hasn’t provided stability to the Patriots’ offense.

Bill Belichick to change his starting QB

Several experts have linked the Patriots head coach with Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. The former 2009 first overall pick and he didn’t really turn the Lions into a playoff contender. Detroit follows a similar pattern in 2020, and they are two games behind the seventh-seeded Arizona Cardinals.

According to sources, Detroit will move off Stafford following this season. He is in his third year of the five-year $135 million extension with the team. However, Stafford holds a $24.8 million for the 2021 campaign.

NFL insider Peter King believes that Stafford is a top option for the Patriots. However, he has some concerns regarding the financial commitment that comes with this deal.

“That’s an interesting one because Matthew Stafford’s probably got five good years left. Bill Belichick’s probably got five good years left,” King said. “So, that would actually make some sense to me. But again, the problem is the money you got to pay him. Do the Patriots want to pay a quarterback 20% of their salary cap? I just don’t think so.”

Belichick and his team are known for making low offers. Will they offer big money to get Stafford?
