Bill Belichick Makes His Decision Receiving Medal of Freedom

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick made a decision regarding the Medal of Freedom.

The US president decided to give Belichick the Medal of Freedom. The NFL world was pretty shocked, mostly because this happens days after Trump supporters stormed into the US Capitol. A lot of people said that Belichick should in no way accept the medal. Well, the brilliant head coach made a decision. He is not taking it. Adam Schefter from ESPN was among the first to confirm the big news.

Bill Belichick is not taking the Medal of Freedom for a reason

The Patriots head coach released a statement following all the rumors about him accepting the medal.

“Recently I was offered the opportunity to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which I was flattered by out of respect for what the honor represents and admiration for prior recipients. Subsequently, the tragic events of last week occurred and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award. Above all, I am an American citizen with great reverence for our nation’s values, freedom, and democracy. I know I also represent my family and the New England Patriots team. One of the most rewarding things in my professional career took place in 2020 when, through the great leadership within our team, conversations about social justice, equality, and human rights moved to the forefront and became actions. Continuing those efforts while remaining true to the people, team, and country I love outweigh the benefits of any individual award.”

This was pretty bold move and NFL fans and experts support Belichick. But, journalist Adam Bagni didn’t like the wording in Belichick’s statement. He suggests that Belichick didn’t want to say that he wasn’t accepting the award. Maybe the coach didn’t want to offend anyone. He was pretty close with Trump in the past. They were friends. Maybe Belichick didn’t want to throw Trump under the buss. We don’t have any info on their current relationship.

Truth is, Belichick did the right thing and doubters can say whatever they want. There was no other way of doing this. Had Belichick accepted the award, he would face serious backlash. Belichick worked really hard to maintain the Patriots dynasty alive for a long time. This award would put a big black dot on his success.
