Cam Newton Was Asked If He’s Open To A Backup Role

NFL experts have made so many predictions about Cam Newton and his future in the league, and some suggest that he should take a backup role.

Newton is coming off of a disappointing season with the New England Patriots. The Patriots struggled throughout the season and the team is missing the playoffs for the first time since 2008. New England offered Newton a deal when no one else did. But, it wasn’t enough. It didn’t help the Patriots make the playoffs. There were too many mistakes and injuries.

The 2015 NFL MVP appeared on The Greg Hill Show Monday and most of the questions were related to his future with the team. One of the questions involved Newton’s backup role in 2020. Will he accept it?

“Honestly it’s too early to tell,” Newton said. “Do I think I have starting talent? Absolutely. Do I think a lot of things I’ve done were devalued? Not the team’s perspective, probably the media’s perspective – absolutely.”

Cam Newton will have to think of his backup role

Newton showed everyone that he can play elite football. But his numbers aren’t as great as they used to be in the past.

In his first year with the team, Newton had his highs and lows. His best passing game of the season happened in the final game of the season. In the win over the New York Jets, Newton threw 21 of 30 for 242 yards and three touchdowns. His worst passing game happened in Week 7. The Patriots lost to San Francisco and Newton threw 9 of 15 for 98 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions.

The veteran quarterback finished the season throwing for 2,657 yards in 15 games. That’s his lowest total in a season since he entered the NFL in 2011.

After Sunday’s win over the Jets, coach Belichick addressed some of the rumors. He denied every bit of it.

Newton didn’t reveal much about his future plans, too.

“Listen, I have my desires,” he told reporters. “I know where my heart’s at. I know the things, who I am. But as far as that, I can’t really speak on it right now. But just my whole time here in New England has been a blessing. I’ve learned so much about myself, about great teammates, unbelievable coaching. Yeah, so I just see how it goes . . . from there.”

Let’s see how will things go for Newton.
