Josh McDaniels As Head Coach… Likelihood Patriots Coordinator Leaves

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has been linked to several teams, and the New England Patriots will have so much to do if he leaves the organization. Well, the whole thing has been going on for seven years. It’s like a tradition. McDaniels’ potential departure has been making headlines for seven straight years.

The rumors started popping in 2013, a year after he rejoined the Patriots as their offensive coordinator. The Denver Broncos had fired McDaniels three years earlier.

These rumors didn’t stop for a second. So many stories of McDaniels’ interviews with other teams.

McDaniels almost became a head coach three years ago. However, he backed out on the Indianapolis Colts right before stepping on their practice field. Let’s just say that McDaniels has been linked to most NFL teams. He likes the idea of coaching his own team. Is McDaniels on his way out?

Josh McDaniels may be out of the Patriots, leaves the team with a big question mark

The Patriots OC passed most of the head coaching opportunities he had back then. Tom Brady left the team to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The offense struggled without him. Moreover, the Patriots offense ranks pretty low this season.

Total offense: 29th
Passing yards: 30th
Rushing yards: 5th
Points: 28th
DVOA: 24th
Pass DVOA: 31st
Rush DVOA: 7th
Yards per drive: 16th
Points per drive: 25th

McDaniels is not the only one to be blamed for the situation. Bill Belichick is the head coach. Veteran quarterback Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19. N’Keal Harry had his problems, too. The Patriots struggled without Brady, and getting McDaniels is a risky move for many teams.

We all know that McDaniels had better success when TB12 suffered his season-ending injury in 2008. Matt Cassell took over at quarterback and the Patriots were fifth in total offense. They ranked eighth in scoring, seventh in DVOA and thid in points per drive.

McDaniels, Cassell and the Pats worked with Randy Moss and Wes Welker.

The Patriots are missing the playoffs, and McDaniels can get every job out there. He didn’t interview with the New York Giants or Carolina Panthers before they got Joe Judge and Matt Rhule. The Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and Atlanta Falcons need a head coach right now. The New York Jets, Los Angeles Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Chicago Bears may jump in the same group on Monday.

McDaniels is not the only one

There aren’t too many head coaching candidates out there.

This group has Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady, New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich.
