Josh McDaniels To Interview For Patriots Rival’s Head Coach Job

The New England Patriots may lose another assistant in the offseason. Two Patriots assistants are interested in the empty head-coaching position in Philadelphia. The Eagles interviews Patriots inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo a few days ago. They are now going after Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and he will have his first interview. The Athletic’s Bo Wulf and Zac Jackson confirmed the information.

The Eagles will interview McDaniels Sunday as confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It’s interesting to note that these stories keep popping each season. McDaniels has been linked with pretty much every team in the NFL. However, this is his first interview of this hiring cycle. Several NFL teams fired their head coaches. The Jacksonville Jaguars got Urban Meyer, the New York Jets got Robert Saleh, and Atlanta Falcons hired Arthur Smith. These teams didn’t even request to interview the Patriots offensive coordinator. According to recent reports, McDaniels isn’t a candidate for the Texans’ empty spot.

Josh McDaniels to have his first hiring interview

McDaniels’ first Tom Brady-less season didn’t end well. The Patriots finished the season with a 7-9 record and missed the change to make the playoffs. The offense ranks 27th in points per game and yards per game in 2020. Veteran quarterback Cam Newton struggled to fit in McDaniels’ system. The team lacked pass catchers and the veteran struggled with inconsistency. In other words, the Patriots had one of the worst passing attacks in the league.

Philadelphia hired head coach Doug Pederson after their 4-11-1 season. The team has offensive struggles. Stats show that benched starting quarterback Carson Wentz will carry a $34.7 million salary cap hit into 2021.

The Patriots offensive coordinator would definitely love to coach a team again. McDaniels said that in December, and maybe the Patriots should be a little worried at this point. Their offensive coordinator was a head coach with the Denver Broncos for 1 ½ season from 2009 to 2010. McDaniels had interviewed for many head coaching positions throughout his entire career. He almost coached the Indianapolis Colts in 2018. The Green Bay Packers (2019) and Cleveland Browns (2020) wanted to hire McDaniels, too.

Quarterbacks coach Jedd Fisch will be a coach at the University of Arizona, and New England doesn’t have a replacement for McDaniels at the moment.
