Quarterback Cam Newton Reveals His 1 Regret With Patriots Season

New England Patriots veteran quarterback Cam Newton is about to end his time with the team and he has one major regret about his Patriots season. The Patriots signed Newton to a one-year deal. The 2015 NFL MVP agreed to get the veteran minimum and inked his contract. Let’s not forget that the Patriots were the only NFL team to make an offer for the former Carolina Panthers signal-caller.

Newton’s first season with the Patriots was horrible. He had a good start of the season but things went down the hill. Newton got COVID-19 and the team lost four straight games. Head coach Bill Belichick benched him twice in favor of second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham.

Belichick hasn’t made any comments on Newton’s role in the final game of the schedule. We don’t know if he will start the game against the New York Jets.

Cam Newton has one regret about his time with the Patriots

In his season with the Patriots, Newton threw for 2,415 yards, five youchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He has the lowest touchdown rate in his career (1.5%). When it comes to his ground game, Newton was great with 513 rushing yards and 12 scores.

NFL experts were worried about Newton’s performance in the game against the Buffalo Bills. He blames the lack of real offseason and preseason for his failure to fit in the Patriots’ system.

“My only regret was I wish I had more time to dissect what I was actually getting in to,” Newton said. “I’ve been in this league long enough to kind of always downplay, like, ‘Man, we don’t need preseason. We don’t need OTAs. We’re ready to go.’ Yeah, maybe if I was still in the system I came from. But learning this system, you just need more time, you need more real reps to kind of go through because there’s only but so much you can kind of make up.

“You could put the eyelashes on. You could do your eyebrows. Could put your lipstick on. The mascara and the lip liner. But sooner or later, it’s going to rain and the real true you will show. And unfortunately it showed — not necessarily in ways that I wanted to.”

Newton’s future with the Patriots is hanging in the air. According to recent predictions, the Patriots may select a quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft. But, Belichick likes Newton and had words of praise for him.
