Report: Former Patriots Coach Returning To ‘Assist’ Patriots Coaching Staff

The New England Patriots will make several major changes in the offseason. The Patriots coaching staff will look slightly different in 2021. According to recent reports, the Patriots hired one of their former assistants.

Jim McBride from the Boston Globe reported that Matt Patricia is returning to the Patriots coaching staff “in a variety of roles.” The former Patriots defensive coordinator was 13-29-1 during his time with the Lions. He was part of the team for three seasons. Bill Belichick will add a familiar face to his squad. New England’s coaching staff has seen several departures in the recent seasons.

Patricia joined the New England Patriots in 2004. He was an offensive coaching assistant and assisted the offensive line before switching to the defensive side of the ball. Patricia took over the Patriots linebackers from 2006-2010 and worked with the safeties in 2011. He was defensive coordinator in 2012 and helped the team win two more Super Bowls before joining another organization in 2018.

Patriots to strengthen their coaching staff

This is a rather positive move for the Patriots. Patricia knows pretty much everything about the Patriots’ system and all the concepts in Belichick’s book. He knows a lot about the defensive end of the ball and will boost the coaching staff. Belichick will work with a trusted voice and hopefully, players won’t have another 7-9 season.

McBride reported that former Lions assistant Evan Rothstein will also join the team. He worked in analytics and joined Patricia in Detroit. Rothstein was the defensive playcaller in Detroit when the coaching staff struggled with COVID-19 late in the regular season.

This is a rather positive change for the Patriots, and Belichick won’t stop here. He is expected to bring many trusted names to his team. Patriots players will have to elevate their game, and Belichick will try to get the right weapons in the offseason. The upcoming 2021 NFL Draft is of great importance for the Patriots. Will Belichick get another quarterback? Will he keep Cam Newton on the roster? There are so many questions we’d like to ask right now.
