Report: Nick Caserio Not Only Patriots Exec Drawing GM Interest

Earlier this week, writers reported that Nick Caserio has attracted the attention of several NFL teams. It looks like Caserio is not the only Patriots exec to leave the organization.

The Denver Broncos requested to interview Patriots assistant director of player personnel Dave Ziegler for their empty general manager spot.

Adam Schefter from ESPN was among the first to report the request.

Ziegler has been working under Caserio for quite some time. He would be the best candidate to replace Caserio if the latter leaves the Patriots in the offseason. Caserio has interviewed for the general manager vacancy in Houston and Carolina. Most experts believe that Caserio is an excellent candidate for the Texans position.

Patriots to lose another exec

Before a promotion in 2020, Ziegler spent four years as the Patriots’ director of pro personnel and three as the team’s assistant director of pro scouting. He started his career in the Broncos’ scouting department after playing college football with Caserio and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels at John Carroll University.

If Caserio and Ziegler leave the Patriots, scouting consultant Elliot Wolf is the next to take over the position. College scouting coordinator Brian Smith and former Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn are part of the game, too. Quinn worked with the Patriots from 2000 to 2015.

The New England Patriots are coming off a terrible season. They finished the season with a 7-9 record and head coach Bill Belichick will have to make some big changes to the roster. Finding the right replacement for veteran quarterback Tom Brady is a priority. The Patriots had the same problem in 2020. 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton joined the team for the season, but he didn’t have a good performance. Belichick likes his starting quarterback and he may even keep him under center in 2021. The head coach may use Newton as a backup quarterback. The veteran will probably have to mentor a younger quarterback. New England is expected to draft a quarterback or trade for a talented player.

The Patriots will go through a wild offseason, and they may lose several key members of the organization.
