Report: Patriots Recent Hire Could Kill Chances of Acquiring Matthew Stafford

Matthew Stafford will leave the Detroit Lions in the next couple of months. He has been linked to several NFL teams, including the New England Patriots. NBC Sports’ Peter King even created a potential trade offer from head coach Bill Belichick. Will the Patriots get Matthew Stafford?

However, the Patriots’ most recent hiring may keep Stafford away from New England. The former No.1 overall pick may not join the Patriots after all.

Detroit fired Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn at the end of November. They had a 13-29-1 record, and the Lions decided to replace them with Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell as general manager and head coach respectively.

Patricia was a former defensive coordinator with the Patriots. He spent some time with the Lions and now he is back in New England. Recent reports suggest that Patricia will have “a variety of roles” with Belichick’s team.

Patriots may not get Matthew Stafford

There’s a growing speculation on Stafford’s relationship with Patricia. Former Lions center Dominic Raiola said Quinn and Patricia actually made Stafford leave Motown.

When it comes to Patricia’s role with the team, we have a few reasons to believe that he won’t take care of the offense. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels interviewed for the head coaching position in Philadelphia. He didn’t get the job and will stay with the Patriots.

Mike Reiss from ESPN talked about McDaniels’ dual-role.

“Hi Andrew. Ultimately only Matthew Stafford knows the answer to what is most important to him. Maybe he wants to play for Bill Belichick, who some believe is the greatest coach in the history of the game. In the end, I’d think Patricia’s presence would be closer to non-factor.”

King believes that the Patriots will use their No.15 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Belichick may also use other draft assets to get a better player.

Is this strong enough to get Stafford in New England? The only thing we can do right now is sit and wait. Belichick has a few great options in his hands.
