Tedy Bruschi Explains Why Patriots Shouldn’t Trade For Matthew Stafford

The New England Patriots have shown interest in several players this offseason. NFL experts have shared their thoughts on the potential signings. Former Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi talked about the Patriots’ interest in Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Rodney Harrison believes Bill Belichick and his team would be a “perfect fit” for Stafford. The Lions will cut ties with the quarterback in the offseason, giving Stafford a chance to sign with the Patriots. Well, Bruschi is not that excited about the signing.

“No, I don’t agree with Hot Rod there,” he said Wednesday on WEEI’s “Ordway, Merloni and Fauria.” “I’m a fan of Matthew Stafford, the player. I’m just not a fan of his teams. And so what does that say? It says watching him play is fun — sling it all over the place, the arm angles, taking chances. All of that stuff, that’s great. But it never equals into anything substantial, anything meaningful for the victory.”

Patriots may not get Matthew Stafford

Bruschi made an interesting point. Stafford has a 74-90-1 record in 12 seasons with the Lions. The team selected him No.1 overall in the 2009 NFL Draft. Detroit made the playoffs just three times in this period. They lost the wild-card round on all three attempts.

Stafford is nothing like Tom Brady. TB12 is trying to win his seventh ring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. One thing stands for sure. Stafford can be an upgrade to Cam Newton. The 2015 NFL MVP struggled to win games with the Patriots.

“He is a star, but, yes, he is not a winner,” Bruschi explained. ” … There’s a lot of guys out there with a lot of stats that have no playoff wins, and I think Stafford doesn’t have playoff wins for a reason.

“Now if he comes to New England, you’re gonna have to drop in pay, you’re gonna have to learn to play a different way. And if there’s anyone that knows what kind of player you are, he’s on the staff now, who’s just been hired, and that’s (former Lions head coach) Matt Patricia.”

We don’t know if Patricia’s hiring will affect Stafford’s chances to sign with the Patriots. Stafford turns 33 in February.

“I would say this, winning football is something that I don’t really recognize when I watch him play,” Bruschi added. “I just recognize the highlight plays that he has and that’s really not gonna work with this type of team, in my opinion.”

NFL teams will show great interest in Stafford. Let’s see how will the Patriots handle this situation.
