Insider Predicts Patriots Will Sign Talented Free-Agent on Budget Deal

The New England Patriots have to fill in several positions. Head coach Bill Belichick needs a franchise quarterback, wide receivers and tight ends. Filling these positions is a priority. According to recent reports, the team can’t afford to sign just one free-agent receiver to a max deal. Many experts believe that the Patriots will sign a No.1 player and get their No.2 option. They will also draft a player in the 2021 NFL Draft. The Patriots will probably offer one of these players a budget deal.

Is Sammy Watkins the right option for the team? The Kansas City Chiefs is 27. Bill Barnwell from EPSN projected the former No.4 overall pick will ink a prove-it deal with Belichick’s team. Barnwell also reported that his deal will go around $4.25 million. It will probably be a one-year deal.

New England has enough cap space to get a group of talented players. Belichick has to fill up several holes on the active roster. Barnwell also believes that Chris Godwin will be the No.1 player for the Patriots. He projects that Belichick will give Godwin a four-year deal worth $78 million.

Patriots to offer Watkins a budget deal

Over the Cap reveals that the Patriots have about $58.5 million in the pocket. They can get free agents, drafted and undrafted rookies and re-sign some of their current players. If Barnwell is right, New England will sink under $24 million next season into solving the current issues at wideout.

When it comes to Watkins, he has strong physical ability to turn into a weapon for passing attacks. He has shown some of this skill in the 2020 season.

In Week 1 against the Houston Texans, Watkins recorded 7 receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. In Week 3, he had 7 receptions. We have every right to believe that Watkins will offer even more in New England.

Watkins has one major problem right now. NFL coaches are worried about his durability. He spent 7 seasons in the NFL and played a full season just once. It was his rookie campaign with the Buffalo Bills. Watkins missed 6+ games three times.
