Patriots Projected to Sign Star WR to 4-Year, $78 Million Deal

The New England Patriots have several issues to address this offseason. Getting a good tight end and a few receivers is a priority right now. According to recent reports, the Patriots are going after a star WR. Can you make any guesses?

Bill Barnwell from ESPN reported that the Patriots may pay big money to get Chris Godwin.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers don’t have enough cap space to cover all of their free agents. They are pretty packed at wide receiver, so Godwin may leave the team in free agency.

“The Bucs have some tough decisions to make with their roster this offseason, given that Shaq Barrett, Lavonte David, Ndamukong Suh, Rob Gronkowski, Antonio Brown, and Godwin are all free agents,” Barnwell wrote. “They can’t retain all of them, and they’re likely to get below-market prices on Brown (and Gronkowski).”

The Bucs made the Super Bowl thanks to Tom Brady. The former Patriots quarterback works really well with Gronkowski, and Barrett is a must-keep option for the team. These two aren’t going anywhere in the near future. There’s no room for Godwin on the 2021 roster.

“My guess is that Godwin’s versatility appeals to another team that lost two big-name contributors to the Buccaneers last offseason. The Patriots sorely need weapons at receiver and Godwin profiles as the sort of player who could continue to flourish with a larger target share. He also doesn’t turn 25 until next month, which might make him more desirable to the Pats than Robinson or Golladay.”

Patriots to get star WR

Godwin would be the Patriots’ top receiver in the upcoming season. He is better than any option on the current roster.

The Buccaneers have several strong options at wide receiver. Rookie Tyler Johnson was brilliant, and Brady likes him a lot. Remember the rumor about Brady and his comments on rookies? His connection to Johnson says it all. Johnson has the ability to replace Godwin. In his first NFL season, Johnson had 12 receptions for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns. But, he is definitely a nice catch. Nine of Johnson’s receptions were for first downs. He had 2 big catches for 31 yards in the postseason. The Bucs also have Scotty Miller, Antonio Brown, and Mike Evans.
