Report: Two Potential Patriots WR Targets Likely To Get Franchise Tag

The New England Patriots will go after several players in the 2021 NFL Draft. Head coach Bill Belichick will also get a few players in the post-draft period. New England has plenty of cap space to revamp the roster. 2020 was a disappointing season for the team. But, things may not go that easy for Belichick. Two potential Patriots WR targets may get the franchise tag by their teams.

Detroit Lions wideout Kenny Golladay and Chicago Bears Allen Robinson may soon make their way to New England. They are free agents, but their teams may tag them.

Jason La Canfora from CBS Sports  believes that both players will probably get tagged in the upcoming period.

“(Robinson and the Bears) could not get a long-term deal worked out as they negotiated into the season, but sources said the Bears are prepared to tag him in an effort to continue that process,” La Canford wrote. “He is a vital cog on an offense that remains under great duress with coaching and management jobs on the line. Even with a murky QB situation, securing their best weapon in the pass game is imperative.”

He discussed Golladay’s situation, too.

“Many teams view him as the best WR option out there, but keeping him on the tag at around $16M, when the open market may bear around $19M, would make a lot of sense. Multiple league sources have told me Golladay will get the tag after his relationship with the prior regime in Detroit got rocky over prolonged extension negotiations. Could this be an eventual tag and trade? People around the league wouldn’t rule that out with the Lions rebuilding and trying to amass picks.”

These tags may not change Belichick’s plans, but they will definitely make things a little complicated for the team.

New England made several mistakes in 2020, and we do hope that players won’t repeat the same performance in 2021. The Patriots need a quarterback, and there’s little to no chance for Cam Newton to return to Foxboro.
