Should Patriots Re-Sign Cam Newton… Rodney Harrison Weighs In

The New England Patriots are checking out their options on the market, and head coach Bill Belichick needs to pick his next quarterback. Veteran quarterback Cam Newton signed with the team this past summer, but his skills and experience weren’t enough. The Patriots missed the playoffs in 2020 and some experts blame Newton for the failure. However, Belichick likes his quarterback and the same applies to offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Will the Patriots re-sign Newton in 2021? Former Patriots defensive back Rodney Harrison shared his thoughts on this possibility.

Newton knows the Patriots really well. He knows the system. The 2015 NFL MVP had a frustrating season and his passing ability was sort of limited. Newton likes the Patriots and the head coach feels the same way about him. But, some suggest that their separation might be the best option for both sides.

Patriots defensive back Rodney Harrison shares his thoughts on Newton’s return

The Patriots have yet to make a decision on Newton’s future with the team. Harrison may not be that supportive about Newton’s return.

“That would be the worst decision (Bill Belichick) has ever made,” Harrison said on “Tom Curran’s Patriots Talk Podcast.” “Because now you’re not being fair to your team. When I saw what I saw with Cam, every time I saw Cam pretty much I was hurt. Because I was a guy that believed in Cam, and when you see him drop back and he continues to throw the ball into the ground, throw it five feet or 5 yards above somebody else, you’re like ‘What are you doing, Cam?’ …”

No, he doesn’t see Newton in New England in 2021.

“You have to find a quarterback. It would be a terrible mistake for Bill Belichick to bring Cam back because Cam can’t play football anymore. He just can’t play quarterback in the National Football League.”

The Patriots may consider bringing Newton to the roster in 2021. They may also draft a quarterback high in the season. They definitely need safety. Is Ryan Fitzpatrick an option for the Patriots? There are so many questions we’d like to ask right now.
