Full Details Emerge From Sunday’s Patriots – Texans Trade

The Houston Texans are pretty busy at the moment. The same applies to Bill Belichick and his team. According to recent reports, the Patriots are doing business with the Texans, and they have agreed to a trade deal.

The Miami Dolphins agreed to a deal with Houston this weekend. Houston is also making a deal for offensive tackle Marcus Cannon from the Patriots. Things are getting really hot in the AFC East.

Jim McBride from the Boston Globe reported that Cannon will leave the Patriots to sign with Houston. Both teams will swap draft picks in the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds of the 2021 NFL Draft. We didn’t get much information on the specific drafts.

It’s a bold move, and it goes in favor of the Patriots. This trade clears up over $13 million cap space for New England in the next couple of seasons.

Cannon was the Patriots’ starting right tackle for most of the last five seasons. However, he sustained an injury and struggled with inconsistency. The veteran played in a full season once since the 2013 NFL season.

Patriots benefit from the Texans trade

Belichick’s Patriots have a strong connection to the Houston Texans. Houston execs Nick Caserio, Jack Easterby, and Romeo Crennell learned a lot under Belichick.

These ties led to speculation that a deal between Houston and New England for Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson was possible. The Patriots have enough cap space to add Watson to the roster and revamp the team in the offseason.

However, the Patriots lack assets and they can’t really have strong options to offer. The Cannon trade opens enough space for additional moves in the offseason.

Belichick and his team will probably have Cam Newton under center for most of the 2021 season. The 2015 NFL MVP signed a one-year deal with the team and we all know what that means. Belichick will probably build his roster around Newton, giving him all the weapons he needs to win games in the upcoming season. This was a rather expected development. We all know that Belichick likes Newton. Keeping him around makes perfect sense.
