Here’s What Patriots’ Jason McCourty Is Looking For In Free Agency

Veteran cornerback Jason McCourty entered free agency March 17. Testing the open market was a good decision for the cornerback and he has a few demands at the moment. It’s hard to imagine someone like McCourty being available for this long.

McCourty talked about his status in an appearance on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football.”

“Yeah, this year in free agency has been different, obviously with the cap and everything as a result of 2020,” McCourty said. “I just want to be somewhere I’m wanted and (have) an opportunity to compete and help the guys around me. As an older player now, I really look forward and love being able to mentor the younger guys and be able to kind of help them grow, as well as going out there competing and trying to win games.

“So wherever that may be, I’m going to be excited. This will be Year 13, so each year, you’re closer to the end. This could be it. I’m just so excited to get somewhere and play football.”

Jason McCourty to leave Patriots in free agency

McCourty joined New England ahead of the 2018 season. He won a Super Bowl and signed another two-year deal worth $10 million in 2019. McCourty became a locker room leader and a versatile player in the Patriots’ secondary. He was a team captain this past season.

The New England Patriots have to address their corner. Will they extend the deal of 2019 NFl Defensive Playe of the Year? Stephon Gilmore’s future is hanging in the air. One thing stands for sure. Gilmore won’t play for $7 million. J.C. Jackson may land somewhere else after being tendered at the second-round level.

Jackson is a restricted free agent and McCourty is unrestricted. According to sources, Gilmore “would be very open” to inking an extension.

Center David Andrews, running back James White, and defensive tackle Lawrence Guy re-signed with Bill Belichick’s team after testing the open market. The Patriots offered Cam Newton a deal and also added defensive end Deatrich Wise, D-tackle Carl Davis, and special teamers Justin Bethel and Cody Davis. Joe Thuney signed with the Kansas City Chiefs and Adam Butler agreed to join the Miami Dolphins.
