Jonnu Smith Explains Why He Signed With Patriots

Star tight end Jonnu Smith became part of the New England Patriots, and he is super excited about the new opportunity. Head coach Bill Belichick offered him a four-year deal worth $50 million. He is the third-highest-paid tight end by average annual value.

The Patriots really like Smith and respect his athleticism. Signing the 25-year-old is one of the best moves Belichick made recently. As you may remember, Belichick and Smith reached an agreement less than an hour into the legal tampering period.

“It was one of the greatest days of my life,” Smith said Tuesday in his introductory video conference. “One of the most exciting days of my life, one of the most thrilling days of my life. Just to be able to start a new chapter, fresh start, new journey — I’m ecstatic, man. Going back to that day, I cried all I could. I don’t want to start tearing up in this interview again.”

Jonnu Smith joins the Patriots for a reason

Why did he choose to sign with the Patriots? Many other teams were interested in his services. Smith had the perfect explanation.

“It just seemed like the perfect opportunity,” he said. “From knowing what I knew, I believed everything they stand for matches my football DNA, and I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity. I believe that this franchise has everything it needs, all the ingredients, all the right stuff, and I’m just honored and blessed to be a part of that.”

Smith was a versatile offensive power in his four years with the Tennessee Titans. He lined up in line, in the slot, out wide and even took handoffs out of the backfield for the team. In an interview with NFL Network, Smith said he was the most versatile tight end in the NFL.

We don’t know much about his role with the team. Hunter Henry joins the Patriots at the same position. If you ask Smith, he will say that pretty much every position works for him.“The type of player I’ve always been since I’ve played this game is ‘whatever it takes,’” said Smith. “Wherever I need to be at to help the team win is what I’m going to do. That’s what I’m here for — to help the team win — and I’m just going to be that guy that’s going to do whatever he’s asked at 100 miles an hour and to know what I’m doing. That’s what I take pride in.”
