New England Patriots Insider Reveals Team’s ‘Plan A’ At Quarterback Position

The New England Patriots offered Cam Newton a one-year deal in 2020, hoping to make the playoffs again. However, the veteran quarterback failed to lead the team to a better record. NFL analysts have made several predictions about the Patriots and their quarterback position. Some say Bill Belichick would sign a veteran quarterback to a short-term deal. Others believe he would give Newton a second chance. Maybe Belichick will select a quarterback in the NFL draft. This year’s draft is packed with talented prospects.

A Patriots insider says Jimmy Garoppolo is a top option for the team at this point. The San Francisco 49ers would have to give up on their veteran quarterback first.

Patriots to sign Jimmy Garoppolo for the quarterback position

Garoppolo led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2019-20. Belichick still trusts him and he may decide to bring Garoppolo back.

“From what I gather from talking to people this week, over the past week, Jimmy Garoppolo still is far and away their Plan A,” Greg Bedard of The Boston Sports Journal, on a recent podcast. “That, if they had to draw it up, exactly the optimal situation for the Patriots for this coming season, it’s Jimmy G coming back here. And of course, that’s all dependent on the 49ers doing something.”

San Francisco general manager John Lynch busted the claims. Bedard’s response to this denial wasn’t really surprising.

“Don’t believe anything John Lynch says. John Lynch has no power there. I guess he runs personnel, but it’s Kyle Shanahan’s show from top to bottom at that place. Shanahan plays things close to the vest, doesn’t show his cards… he might even leave Lynch twisting in the wind.”

San Francisco has shown interest in Teddy Bridgewater. If the 49ers add the player, he will probably start fames instead of Garoppolo.

“Make no doubt, Garoppolo is Plan A for the New England Patriots, and Patriots fans should be rooting for the 49ers to do something at quarterback, and if you think Teddy Bridgewater is going there to be a $17 million backup insurance policy for Jimmy Garoppolo, I have a hard time seeing that,” Bedard said.

Garoppolo played six games in 2020. He struggled with injuries and missed too much time on the field. The former Patriots quarterback was able to complete 94 of 140 passes for 1,096 yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions. His interception rate stands at 3.6 percent which is career-worst for the signal-caller.
