Patriots Fans Hoping Stephon Gilmore Remains Won’t Love This Report

The New England Patriots have yet to make a decision on Stephon Gilmore. The cornerback will enter the 2021 season and this is the last year of his contract. He is a No.1 cornerback for the team, but things are far from certain at this point.

The 31-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent in 2022, and he will turn 32 next year.

The two-time All-Pro saw a $5 million pay bump heading into the 2020 season. However, he’s owed about $7 base salary in 2021.

We don’t really know if Gilmore is willing to play for this base salary. He may ask for another raise or even try to sign a new contract. Some believe that Gilmore will probably get a deal from another NFL team.

Patriots to trade Stephon Gilmore?

Jason La Canfora from CBS Sports released an interesting record. According to him, NFL general managers believe the Patriots will trade their star cornerback. The Patriots haven’t offered Gilmore an extension, and a trade “still seems like an eventuality.”

CBS Sports writer Patrik Walker says Gilmore is among nine NFL superstars “who could be traded this offseason.”

“Quiet as it’s kept, quarterbacks aren’t the only ones on the trade block this offseason. After reportedly being on it ahead of the NFL deadline last season, Stephon Gilmore might again find himself in the mix — and he’ll garner plenty of interest,” Walker published on Tuesday. “Entering the final year of his deal with the Patriots, Gilmore is set to hit the team’s salary cap for $15 million in 2021 and if they’re not interested in offering him another multi-year deal to his liking — trying to get assets in return for losing him makes sense. One of the best corners in the league, and arguably the best, the Patriots should be able to get a quality piece or two in return for him, assuming they decide it’s time to let the All-Pro head out of town by their hand and not by his own.”

Gilmore may join the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers and New York Giants. He played in 11 games in 2020, but missed three games due to a knee issue, and also missed the final two due to a torn quad.
