Robert Kraft Gives Honest Admission On Cam Newton’s Performance

The New England Patriots decided to bring Cam Newton back for another season. His debut with the team didn’t go well, but Bill Belichick likes him a lot. The Patriots offered Newton a one-year deal. It’s a good move, and team owner Robert Kraft made an honest admission for the veteran quarterback.

Newton entered 2020 with incredible dominance on the field. The first few weeks were great, but Newton got COVID and had to miss some time. His return was filled with mistakes. Newton lacked strong weapons and his passing game was weak.

Robert Kraft made the right admission

In 15 starts for the Patriots, Newton completed 65.8 percent of his throws for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. It was an accurate season for Newton but he hit awful lows in per-game yardage, TDs, and touchdown rate at 2.2 percent.

The offense struggled, too. The Patriots had one of the weakest groups of skill position players in the league. Jakobi Meyers had 729 yards through the air but failed to score. Damiere Byrd was the only player to stack above 379 yards. He finished with 604 and a score.

Kraft is well aware of the fact that the team didn’t give Newton the weapons he needed to win in 2020. This year is different. Belichick spent a lot of money in free agency.

“We’re in a situation where we have, at this point in time, we’re trying to do what the best thing for us is,” Kraft said. “I think, in fairness to Cam, I’m not sure he had the proper weapons around him last year. Then he got COVID and there were a lot of things that happened.

“And I’m not sure that Jarrett has ever really gotten a fair shot so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.”

Kraft knows that his team will have to work on the quarterback position. They have yet to find the quarterback of the future.

“One way or another,” the Patriots owner said, “we have to get that position solidified.”

2021 is a big season for the Patriots and they are ready to win.
