Bill Belichick Scout Notes and ‘Wishlist’ Reveal Patriots’ Best QB Fit

The New England Patriots are set to make a few moves in the upcoming NFL Draft. Head coach Bill Belichick is really careful with his scout notes and he may be targeting one particular player.

Daniel Jeremiah from NFL.com took notice of Belichick’s scout notes from his time as a head coach and general manager of the Cleveland Browns.

Bill Belichick follows similar scout notes

The Patriots head coach is looking for several particular traits. Phil A. Perry from NBC Sports linked the qualities to the ultimate 2021 prospect at each position to generate Belichick’s “wishlist.”

“This one is relatively easy. Jones is arguably the most accurate passer in the class as well as one of the best and quickest decision-makers. The fact that Belichick mentions “arm” early in his description could be a concern for Jones fans, but when it comes to being “a real competitor,” fundamentally sound and accurate (a trait Belichick must have mentioned twice to hammer it home), Jones makes sense. The guy had to compete with Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa just to get on the field before winning a National Championship last season. And he did it all for Belichick’s defensive coordinator in Cleveland during that stretch in the 90s: Nick Saban.”

We can’t really compare the accuracy of collegiate quarterbacks. What metric do they use to judge the trait? Keegan Stiefel of Pat’s Pulpit believes that Justin Fields has unparalleled accuracy. David Lombardi from The Athletic says he was superbly accurate.

Belichick has words for mobile quarterbacks. He delivers words of praise for these players. That’s why he signed Cam Newton last season. Belichick made him compete with Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer and ended up giving him the top job. Newton earned it but his debut with the team was a failure. It wasn’t his fault. The Patriots struggled with their offense throughout the entire season. Belichick trusted Newton enough to give him the top position. Let’s see how will things roll in 2021. He may sign another quarterback to learn under the 2015 NFL MVP.
