Chris Simms Believes Patriots Could Target This Underrated QB Prospect

The New England Patriots may be interested in Justin Fields, but they may also try to get an underrated QB prospect. Chris Simms made some shocking predictions regarding the 2021 NFL Draft and the group of quarterbacks.

According to Simms, Zach Wilson is the best quarterback in the class. He placed him before first overall pick Trevor Lawrence. Simms is a former NFL quarterback and current analyst with NBC. He placed Kellen Mond at No.4, right behind Mac Jones. Well, he is in front of Justin Fields and Trey Lance. This changes everything.

This is against everything we’ve hear in the past couple of months. Most NFL analysts say that Lawrence, Wilson, Jones, Fields and Lance are the top quarterback prospects. Mond would fall into the second batch of signal-callers.

Is there any chance for the Patriots to try to get Mond? The four-year starter at Texas A&M goes under the radar.

New England has the 15th overall pick in the first round. Some say Belichick would trade up to get a top prospect. Mond will probably be available at No.15.

“That is the place I kind of look at a little bit, to where I go, ‘Ooh, New England could be a place that’s into Kellen Mond,’ ” Simms said on the latest episode of the “Unbuttoned” podcast, which dropped Thursday. “Because he’s gonna be able to run, he’s a really good athlete. But he can really play in the pocket and be a real NFL passer. That’s where, to me, he is special that way.”

Patriots to target the underrated QB prospect

The 21-year-old threw for 2,282 yards with 19 touchdowns and three interceptions in 2020. He led his guys to a 9-1 record. The talented player rushed for 294 yards and four touchdowns. HE was a duel-threat quarterback for the Aggies.

Mond may end up with the Patriots and spend a year behind Cam Newton/ “The way it sounds, to me, I think Kellen Mond is that guy that could be late first round, somebody trades up. Like maybe what Green Bay did with Jordan Love (in the 2020 NFL Draft),” Simms said. ” … The New England part, too, I could see that: Kellen Mond, late first round, early second round-type guy. If he’s sitting there on the board at maybe 37, 38, or something like that, I wouldn’t be shocked to see New England come up and get him.”

During his appearance on NBC Sports’ ProFootballTalk, Sims said Mond is a first-round quarterback. He even said the young talent could line up against most of the quarterbacks in the past 5-10 years.

Simms’ praised Mond’s decision-making and elite arm. There’s just one issue. Simms wishes Mond would relax with the ball and scramble more. But, he can change that overnight.
