Jason McCourty Believes This Went ‘Unsaid’ About Cam Newton In 2020

Veteran quarterback Cam Newton didn’t have much success with the New England Patriots in 2020. He worked really hard but the Patriots finished the season with a 7-9 record. Jacon McCourty discussed this during an appearance on the “JRSportBrief” show. The free agent said Newton’s failure wasn’t caused by the lack of preparation.

The McCourty twin praised Newton for his leadership and great work ethic. 2020 was a challenging season for everyone.

“Cam did a great job, I feel like, of building that confidence within guys,” McCourty said, as transcribed by WEEI. “Letting them know, the trash talk he brought to practice every single day, and we’d be going at it from an offensive and defensive standpoint. But from a defender, you appreciate it because he’s building up in these guys what they possibly can become.

“And I think something that kind of goes unsaid about him — because even him coming here, I didn’t know much about Cam at all — this is a guy who was in the building every single day at 5:30 in the morning. We would be leaving the building 6:30-7, and Cam was still sitting at his locker, getting ready to go in and meet with the offensive coordinator or do something. … He was one of the last guys to leave the building.”

Cam Newton won’t have another season like 2020

The 2015 NFL MVP was really busy this offseason. He re-signed with the Patriots last month. Newton had throwing sessions with Patriots pass catchers. Gunner Olszewski and Jakobi Meyers were there, too. Newton enjoyed his workout in the Boston area.

Unlike last season, Newton will have a normal preseason and training camp. The Patriots have a stronger roster this season and Newton got all the weapons he lacked in 2020. Head coach Bill Belichick has to make a decision on his starting quarterback. Will Newton go under center?

When it comes to McCourty, he is a free agent who is “excited to get somewhere and play football.” He has yet to sign a deal in the NFL. Will the Patriots bring him back for another season?
