Key Laker Calls Contract ‘Unfortunate,’ Reveals He Had Better Offers

The Los Angeles Lakers added Markieff Morris to the roster for a reason. It was one of the best decisions the franchise has made in the past few months. Some would say he is the less talented of the Morris twins, but Markieff turned out to be a key player for his team. The Laker can get a nice contract this offseason.

The veteran forward entered the offseason with great ideas on his mind. He talked to several suitors, and there was a huge chance for him to join the Los Angeles Clippers. Markieff had a chance to play with his brother.

LA to reward the key Laker with a nice contract

Great Markieff signed with the Lakers. He inked another deal worth just above $2.3 million. Yes, other teams could’ve given him more money, but Markieff wanted to be a Laker. Kyke Goon from the OC Register has more information on this.

“Morris was under the impression this offseason that he would get a bigger offer than a veteran’s minimum from the Lakers,” Goon wrote. “He called it ‘unfortunate’ that the Lakers, who are just barely under the hard cap this season, could not offer more and acknowledged that other teams were. But when he weighed the pros and cons, he couldn’t justify going anywhere else.”

Markieff wanted to stay with the Lakers for another season. Wonder why? He has the perfect response.

“I would rather come back home (to L.A.) where they know me,” he said. “We talked about getting more money, and it was supposed to be that way, but even so, the Lakers just fit me best. It’s just a perfect fit for me.”

Most players would gladly make the most money possible. Markieff has a different story to tell. Playing for a winning team sure matters. Maybe the Lakers will decide to reward his loyalty in the offseason.

Markieff elevated his game since LeBron James and Anthony Davis suffered injuries. He was averaging 10.2 points per game in March. The talented player is averaging 11.9 points this month. Veteran guard Dennis Schroder has nothing but words of praise for the talented player. Markieff deserves a raise right now.

“He’s gotta get paid,” Schroder said, via Silver Screen & Roll. “He’s tough. Helping us on the defensive end, he has such toughness. On the offensive end, spreading the floor, getting offensive rebounds after free throws.”
