Patriots’ Best Trade-Up Partner and Potential Price for QB Revealed

The New England Patriots signed veteran quarterback Cam Newton to another deal, but they can add another player through the 2021 NFL Draft. The team enters the draft with the No.15 pick. Getting a top prospect won’t be that easy unless they trade up and down the draft. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is not someone who’d pay a big price for a QB. Will he change his approach?

The Patriots spent a big portion of their money in the offseason. Most experts believe the Patriots will take a similar approach in the upcoming draft.

Patriots to pay lower price for a QB

Adam Schefter from ESPN reported that the Carolina Panthers have already had “conversations with other teams about potentially trading back in the draft.” The team has the right pick in the draft.

Trading up the NFL draft makes a perfect sense for most quarterback-deprived teams. The Patriots belong to this group, too. They have the No.15 pick and going up seven spots makes more sense than getting to No.4. The Atlanta Falcons would probably trade back, but this deal isn’t really ideal for the Patriots.

Patriots salary cap expert Miguel Bezan wrote about a deal that was sealed five years ago. The Patriots may pull out something similar in the draft.

New England doesn’t have a pick in the 70s. However, Belichick has the 90th selection and it has less value. If this pick doesn’t get it done packed with a second-round pick from the 2022 NFL Draft, Belichick may add his 197th pick to compensate for a third-round pick which is 14 spots lower than the most recent comparable contract.

Belichick is not the only coach to contact the Panthers. The same goes to the Washington Football Team, Chicago Bears and the Denver Broncos. Denver has the No.9 pick, and Washington stands at No.19. Chicago has 22nd overall.

Washington signed Ryan Fitzpatrick in the offseason and Taylor Heinicke is a good player. However, neither of them is considered a quarterback of the future for the team.
