Patriots Re-Sign ‘Mr. INT’ JC Jackson to One-Year Deal

The New England Patriots made yet another move.  Head coach Bill Belichick made some really bold moves in free agency, and he won’t stop making changes. The Patriots have changed their roster. Tom Brady’s departure triggered an avalanche of signings and cuts. Cam Newton stepped in as a replacement for the quarterback but the Patriots didn’t give him enough weapons in 2020. This led to a 7-9 record and a missed opportunity to win a Super Bowl. Belichick changed his approach and made some big signings this offseason. He will probably follow the same pattern in the 2021 NFL Draft. Belichick is busy in the meantime, too. According to recent sources, the Patriots have re-signed JC Jackson to another deal.

The veteran cornerback agreed to ink a one-year deal worth $3.38 million. The Patriots offered him a second-round tender in the offseason and Jackson agreed to stay in New England.

It’s official and the Patriots confirmed it by posting a GIF of Mr. INT. Let’s not forget that Jackson led the Patriots in interceptions in 2020 with nine. That’s one interception below Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavier Howard. The Dolphins cornerback leads the NFL with 10 interceptions.

Patriots bring back JC Jackson

New England gave Jackson the second-round tender and he became a restricted free agent. Other NFL teams could have tried to get him. Had Jackson signed an offer sheet with another team and had the Patriots opted to let him go, New England would have received a second-round selection from the organization that signed Jackson. Simple, right?

NFL teams were busy in the offseason and teams deal with salary constraints. Restricted free agents haven’t really received a lot of interest in the offseason. These two years will be really different.

Jackson has another season to prove his worth as he tries to carry the momentum from a great campaign with New England in 2020. The Patriots will also get more time to assess whether they will keep Jackson in the future.

Jackson went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft and the team inked him as a free agent. He started 11 games in 2020 and will join the Patriots defensive backfield in 2021.
