Todd McShay Has Patriots Trading Up For QB In Latest NFL Mock Draft

Todd McShay included the New England Patriots in his latest mock draft. His picks make perfect sense and some analysts would agree with him. McShay doesn’t believe the team would wait around on Day 1 of the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. They won’t just sit there and wait for a quarterback to knock on their door.

The Patriots will enter this month’s draft with one big need. They have to address the quarterback situation immediately. Bill Belichick signed Cam Newton to a one-year deal and Jarrett Stidham is still part of the team. Well, Belichick may need to select a quarterback, too. The Patriots are set to make the first pick at No.15.

Todd McShay has the best fit for the Patriots draft

McShay released his latest mock draft and has the Patriots moving up four spots in order to draft a quarterback. They really like Ohio State’s Justin Fields so yes, Belichick will try to make an effort.

“Even after the Niners’ move up the board, it doesn’t appear Jimmy Garoppolo is in the cards this season for the Patriots,” McShay wrote for ESPN.com. “And while they brought back Cam Newton, the veteran is only signed for a year at $3.5 million guaranteed. The Pats haven’t spent a first-round pick on a QB since 1993 (Drew Bledsoe), but now is the time. Fields is accurate downfield and can develop into a top-tier starter for a team searching for stability at the position in the post-Tom Brady era.”

Trevor Lawrence is a virtual lock to be the top pick. Zach Wilson will go at No.2 with the New York Jets. the San Francisco 49ers traded up the draft board to select at No.3. They will probably draft Mac Jones. This leaves Fields for the New England Patriots. The same applies to Trey Lance.

Fields won’t be a consolation prize though. The Patriots really like him. He is a dual-threat who offers great quarterback size. The Patriots have strong offensive personnel and the Buckeyes prospect would be a great fit in Foxboro. So, let’s see what happens next in New England.
