Patriots Make Several Changes To Their Scouting Department

The New England Patriots made some big changes to the roster and they are now changing the scouting department. Head coach Bill Belichick was really active in free agency and he signed a bunch of good guys in the 2021 NFL Draft. It’s time to change the scouting department.

Neil Stratton reported that the Patriots made three big moves.

The organization promoted Matt Groh to Director of College Scouting. Groh is the most experienced among Patriots’ college scouts. He first joined the team in 2011. He was scouting assistant and became scout two years later. Groh became national scout in 2019. He had a big role in the pre-draft process and now he has a chance to do something better for the team.

“Matt’s done a great job for us,” head coach Belichick said about Groh back in 2019. “He’s kind of worked his way up. Left his law career behind and converted to football, and he’s done an excellent job of scouting for us and helping build the depth of our football team.”

Patriots add key member to the scouting department

Steve Cargile was promoted to Director of Pro Scouting

Cargile is coming off his 10 season with the personnel department in New England. He was set to take over as the Patriots’ pro scouting director. Dave Ziegler had this position before he became director of player personnel.

Cargile was a player for six seasons. The Dallas Cowboys signed him after the 2004 NFL Draft. He also spent seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns, and New York Giants.

His playing days were coming to an end, and Cargile did his best to stay in the NFL.

“I started sending my resume and cover letter to every team in the league, anybody that I knew,” he said in 2017. “I got a lot of ‘no’s.’ I got a lot of people that did not respond, but New England was the one team that responded and brought me up for an interview.”

Camren Williams is a national scout

Groh went up the Patriots ladder and the Patriots will turn Williams into a national scout. He first joined the organization in 2016 as a scouting assistant.

“Being exposed to a program like the New England Patriots and an organization like that is second to none. Whether you’re trying to work in any field, it’s incredible to be a part of and learn from Coach [Bill] Belichick and the things that he does,” Williams told Eleven Warriors in 2018.

“I didn’t have a job before here. So I had to learn to evaluate a quarterback. I had to learn how to evaluate a punter and a kicker and a long snapper. So from a development standpoint, I learned a ton … that has grown me as a scout. But then also from a cultural standpoint, being in New England has been a huge teaching tool for me.”
