Bill Belichick Addresses Cam Newton’s Injury, Absence From Practice

The New England Patriots missed the playoffs in 2020. The team signed a group of great players in the offseason. A lot of players joined the team in free agency, and the organization did an amazing job in the 2021 NFL Draft. The Patriots selected a quarterback in the first round and many believe that Mac Jones is the quarterback of the future. He got an extra chance to show his skills on the field because the veteran quarterback sustained an injury. Head coach Bill Belichick discussed Cam Newton and his physical health and he shared an update on his injury.

The 2015 NFL MVP had a setback in the offseason. He injured his hand during OTAs earlier this month. This injury keeps him out of the field and Newton will miss some time. He will probably return on time for training camp.

Bill Belichick is an optimist about Cam Newton and his injury

Newton is treating a bone bruise to his right hand. It’s not serious but the Patriots played it safe early in offseason training. Belichick will have more time to watch Jones and third-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham in action.

The Patriots head coach shared some details about Newton’s injury. He is not really concerned about it.

“He’s doing alright,” the legendary head coach said. “He won’t be out there today but it’s nothing serious… He’ll be alright.”

Newton’s first season with the Patriots went up and down. He couldn’t help the team win games. He got COVID and lacked strong weapons. The Patriots changed the winning formula and brought some big names in the offseason. Newton will be working with great weapons in 2021.

The veteran finished 7-8 and started 15 games. He threw for 2,657 yards and just eight touchdowns with 10 interceptions. Newton completed over 65% of his throws but offered a pedestrian 7.2 yards per attempt. Yes, rushing is one of his biggest assets. Newton picked up 592 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.

Patriots quarterbacks will face serious competition this summer. Belichick once said that Newton is his quarterback. Will he change his mind in September? Jones will have to do really well in training camp.
