Cam Newton Gives Mac Jones a New Nickname

Cam Newton honored Mac Jones with a new nickname. The veteran quarterback really likes the rookie, and yes, we have a few good reasons to believe that Jones will replace him at some point.

If you are a Patriots player, nine times out of 10, Newton is going to give you a nickname. In his meeting with the media on Thursday, Jones revealed that Newton calls him, “Mac and Cheese.”

Jones is in a really interesting position at the moment. The New England Patriots selected Jones in the first round of the NFL Draft. Head coach Bill Belichick used the 15th overall selection on the rookie. He has repeatedly made it clear Newton is Patriots starter.

Mac Jones accepts his new nickname, lessons from Cam Newton

The rookie quarterback will have to soak up all the Newton’s knowledge. He will learn from the 2015 NFL MVP and that’s a great opportunity. Jones is building an excellent relationship with Newton. Hopefully, these two will lead the Patriots to the top. Jones watches Newton’s reps and learns as much as he can. He is working on his skills and watching tape has helped him a lot. That’s exactly what Belichick wants him to do in 2021.

“It’s been good,” Jones said during the video conference linked above. “He calls me ‘Mac & Cheese,’ so I got my nickname. But he’s done an awesome job being a good mentor, and he brings great energy. And Brian (Hoyer) and Jarrett (Stidham) have done a good job of helping me in the film room. All three of them, I just watch their reps and learn as much as I can. You don’t have to be in on that play to learn, so I just have to figure out how to do that. I’ve been getting a lot better just watching tape and learning how to do that, and they’ve helped me in that regard.”

Patriots quarterbacks will compete for the top job in 2021. Newton will start games in September, but Jones can replace him at any moment. What about Jarrett Stidham? He has shown great success in OTAs.
