Dan Marino Reveals Why He’s Rooting Against Bill Belichick

Dan Marino is not a fan of Bill Belichick. He is joining Don Shula’s team. Shula is the all-time winningest head coach in the league. Yes, those 328 wins earned him a spot on the top. Shula won a lot of these games with the help of Marino. The latter was his quarterback and these two created the perfect bond.

The Patriots head coach is on a good way to break Shula’s record. We know that Coach B can do great things on the field. How does Marino feel about this? Oh, yes, he is not pulling for Belichick to break the record. The Patriots head coach has 280 regular-season wins entering the upcoming 2021 NFL season. He is 49 wins away from topping the legendary head coach.

“I hope he don’t get it,” Marino recently told Cameron Wolfe of ESPN. “I’m a Dolphin for life. Coach Shula for life. I don’t want him to get it.”

Dan Marino motivates Bill Belichick

Belichick finished the 2020 NFL season with a 7-9 record. This was his worst season with the Patriots in the past two decades. From 2009-19, Belichick averaged 12.3 wins per season. We can’t underestimate that, right?

If Belichick gets back to his winning pace, he will surpass Shula at the end of the 2024 season. If this doesn’t happen, Belichick will definitely surpass the legend at the beginning of 2025. To do this, Belichick’s Patriots will have to boost their performance. Coach B will be in his mid-70s at that point. We don’t really know if he will be in the mood of coaching at that point.

When it comes to Marino, he went 2-0 as a quarterback against the Patriots head coach when the latter was coaching the Cleveland Browns. In the second of these games, which was Week 6 of the 1993 season, Marino sustained a season-ending Achilles tear.

Marino doesn’t want Belichick to surpass Belichick and we understand that. But, Belichick doesn’t pay much attention to outside noise. He is focused on his next season. Cam Newton will probably be his starting quarterback and Mac Jones is next on the list.
