Marc Gasol has a few good reasons to get emotional about the Los Angeles Lakers. The veteran is coming off a tough season with the team. The former NBA champion inked a deal with the franchise in order to get more experience and playmaking in the frontcourt. Well, things didn’t go really well and the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the NBA playoffs.
The three-time All-Star said that his final goal with signing with the team was simple. He did it to honor his brother Pau. The latter had an amazing career as a Laker and he won a lot of games with Kobe Bryant.
“I came into this year with the mindset of enjoying every second of it, soaking everything in, and understanding what an honor it is to wear this jersey,” Gasol said (via CBS Sports). “Obviously, you guys know my family history with the team and how much it meant to Pau. So for me to be here and play for this team was an honor, and it is an honor. So I didn’t take it for granted for one second.”
Marc and Pau Gasol will always be emotional about the Lakers
Pau was amazing with the team. In his six season as Lakers player, he won back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010. He and Kobe were a match made in heaven. Marc really respects this. Being part of the team was a big deal for Marc and he was more than excited to put on the Lakers uniform.
Marc tried to help the Lakers win a championship. This would have been his second ring in the league. Instead of replicating what Pau did a decade ago, Marc and his Lakers teammates left the playoff run in the first round.
The Phoenix Suns were really strong and dominant and LA struggled with injuries. Players have yet to build strong chemistry and Gasol knows that. General Manager Rob Pelinka would keep the core intact. Let’s see if LA players will return to the big city for another year.
