Stephon Gilmore Reportedly Makes Decision On Patriots Minicamp

Veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore made a decision on Patriots minicamp. According to recent updates, he will miss sessions. Let’s not forget that he is one of the best players on the roster. Is there a reason for this?

Several reports have confirmed that the Patriots All-Pro cornerback has decided not to attend Patriots’ minicamp. The 30-year-old is entering the final year of his deal with the Patriots. Gilmore has been part of many trade rumors in the offseason. The whole thing started a few years ago. Things got worse before the trade deadline.

Mike Garafolo from NFL Network reported that Gilmore will skip the minicamp this week.

ESPN has more details on Gilmore’s contract situation:

“Gilmore is required to report for the start of the three-day mandatory minicamp Monday or will be subject to fines that could total $93,085 — which breaks down to $15,515 for the first missed day, $31,030 for the second missed day and $46,540 for the third missed day.

“Gilmore is entering the final year of his five-year, $65 million pact and is scheduled to earn a base salary of $7 million — well below market value for a player of his caliber.”

Head coach Bill Belichick discussed Gilmore’s status Monday morning and he didn’t really say much about the cornerback. We all know that Belichick always sidesteps questions. That’s just his style.

Gilmore is an elite cornerback. He is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. Belichick won a lot of games with him on the field. Unfortunately, the veteran struggled with injuries and missed some time on the field. In other words, Gilmore is not a prime candidate for a contract extension. Let’s see what happens next in the offseason. The Patriots may give up on the veteran. Belichick brought a lot of new guys to New England and maybe it’s time to part ways with the elite cornerback.
