Bill Belichick Deflects Question About Quarterback Competition

On Tuesday morning, Belichick talked about the alleged quarterback competition in training camp. He provided a vague response. Well, everything points to the fact that there will be a competition at training camp.

“Every one of us has to go out and establish our level of performance in whatever our role or capacity is,” Belichick told the media. “It’s a new season. … That includes all of us.”

Belichick has four quarterbacks at the moment. Brian Hoyer and Cam Newton inked a one-year deal each. Jarrett Stidham is still under contract. Belichick also selected a quarterback in the first round of the 2021 draft. Many believe that Mac Jones will be the quarterback of the future.

Newton will probably start the season at center. Several analysts believe that Belichick will put give his rookie a chance to take the lead at some point of the regular season.

The 2015 NFL MPV started in 15 games for the Patriots in 2020. He had 2,657 passing yards and eight touchdown passes. Newton struggled in his first season with the Patriots, but Belichick offered him a one-year contract in March.

In an appearance on ESPN Radio’s “Keyshawn, JWill & Zubin,” Newton discussed his role with the Patriots. He also talked about his expectations.

“For me, the Patriots’ organization has been impeccable … so my time there has been everything I could have asked for,” Newton said. “I guess it’s now time for me to uphold my end of the bargain, through and through.”
