Patriots Cut Former Ohio State Wide Receiver Before Camp

The New England Patriots decided to cut one wide receiver days before training camp. Former Ohio State star Devin Smith will no longer be part of the team.

The New York Jets had Smith for three seasons, but he left the team and spent time with three other teams. The Patriots decided to cut him just because he didn’t fit in the system. Head coach Bill Belichick is getting ready for training camp. It looks like he didn’t see a spot for Smith on his roster.

Smith joined the Patriots practice unit at the end of the 2020 season. In January, he inked a reserve/future contract with the Patriots. Many thought he would join the roster this summer. Well, it didn’t happen. Smith will have to look for a home somewhere else.

Jim McBride from The Boston Globe reported that the Patriots have released Smith. Tight end Devin Asiasi will have to spend time out too.

Patriots cut inconsistent wide receiver

Smith last played in 2019. He was part with the Dallas Cowboys. In four games with the team, Smith had five of his nine targets for 113 yards and a touchdown.

The Jets selected Smith No.37 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft. The wide receiver didn’t make a big impact but his rookie campaign was really strong. Smith had nine catches on 28 targets for 115 yards and a touchdown. The receiver’s season ended in a December as he tore his ACL.

The following season, Smith had just one catch for 20 yards in four games with the Jets. He started the season on the physically unable to perform list. He rehabbed the knee injury he suffered late in the previous year. Smith suffered another torn ACL in April 2017 and the team placed him on injured reserve and missed the entire season. The team waived him in the summer of 2018. Smith appeared on the Texans practice unit in 2020 and then joined the Pats.

Belichick will consider making a few changes and he could really use another familiar name.
