Report: Here’s What Stephon Gilmore Expects For Patriots Future

Stephen Gilmore didn’t join his teammates for mandatory minicamp and fans have some concerns about his Patriots future. Sort of. Some say he is forcing his way out of the New England Patriots. Well, he is a veteran who happens to be one of the best cornerbacks in the league. He doesn’t need an extra preparation to get ready for the next season.

Enter Gilmore’s contract situation.

The veteran is in a tricky situation at the moment. He is set to earn $7 million this season which is much lower than the salary of other cornerbacks. The former Defensive Player of the Year would love to earn more money. Some of you would agree that he deserves more money. But, Gilmore suffered a bad injury in 2020 and he is aging. Head coach Bill Belichick wouldn’t waste his money on an aging player who struggles to stay healthy.

Gilmore is entering the final year of his five-year deal worth $65 million. His deal is expiring this year and Gilmore would love to get some long-term security from the Patriots. Jeremy Fowler from ESPN provided an encouraging update on Gilmore’s future with the Patriots.

Stephon Gilmore doesn’t have concerns about his Patriots future

According to Fowler, Gilmore will strengthen his negotiations with the Patriots before training camp. Moreover, he believes that Gilmore will stay with the Patriots for another season. Great update, right?

“The Patriots and Gilmore know they can intensify contract talks sometime in the next few weeks. And I’m told that Gilmore has largely not expected to be traded throughout this process because he knows the Patriots have made moves with Gilmore in mind,” Fowler said, via Bleacher Report. “They haven’t gotten a cornerback to replace him. And as one source told me, ‘Do the Patriots really want to go into Week 4 against Tom Brady without their top cornerback?’ And so things are slow right now, but I expect those sides to ramp up negotiations sometime before training camp.”

Belichick doesn’t have a replacement for Gilmore. If his star cornerback leaves the team, Belichick will have to find a suitable replacement.
