Report: Patriots Sign Quarterback To Four-Year, $15.6M Contract

The New England Patriots agreed to another quarterback contract. According to recent reports, New England has locked up its rookie signal-caller.

Field Yates from ESPN reported that the Patriots signed Mac Jones to a four-year rookie deal worth $15.6 million. That’s not all. There’s also a fifth-year option.

The Patriots selected Jones with the 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The rookie had yet to sign a deal with the Patriots. Teams signed their first-round picks in June and Jones was waiting for his big deal.

NFL experts would agree that Jones lived up to expectations Patriots coaches had for him in the three-day minicamp in May. Head coach Bill Belichick had a really good season to get Jones and the rookie did an incredible job on the field. Belichick watched his rookie on his Pro Day and he really liked the performance.

Patriots to get more from the quarterback contract

New England offered Cam Newton a one-year deal. The veteran will probably start games in September. Newton has so much to prove right now. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has noticed an improvement in Newton’s performance. The 2015 NFL MVP will probably take the leading role in September.

If you ask NFL analysts, they’d say that Jones will probably take over the starting position. Newton struggled with his passing game and Belichick would love to see him connect with Patriots receivers and tight ends. The head coach signed Henry Hunter and Jonnu Smith in the offseason. N’Keal Harry may end up on the trade block. Julian Edelman decided to retire. But, Belichick added some really great players and he will probably rely on these guys.

Jones will take a leading role at some point of his career. Many would agree that he is the quarterback of the future for the Patriots. Newton is aging and Belichick has to think of a backup solution.

The rookie has his deal secured and he will definitely stay with the team for a while. Some have compared him to veteran quarterback Tom Brady. Will he win six rings with the Patriots?
