This Mac Jones College Stat Bodes Well For Patriots’ Future Ceiling

The New England Patriots selected Mac Jones 15th overall and his college stat hints at his role with the team.

Seth Walder from ESPN believes the total QB rating Jones had in 2020 for Alabama will help him fit in Bill Belichick’s system. Players like him look really great on the field. Jones had a 96.1 quarterback rating. It’s the highest any college quarterback has posted since ESPN 2011 when they created the stat to compare quarterbacks’ total contributions to winning and impact on important games.

“There’s reasonable debate about how well Jones’ game will translate to the pro level,” Walder wrote. “But any Patriots fan looking for hope in the numbers needn’t look too far: He recorded the highest college QBR season in the history of the metric last year! His 96.1 beat out Kyler Murray’s and Joe Burrow’s amazing seasons for the top spot.”

Belichick signed Cam Newton to another one-year deal and he has the best chance to start games in New England. However, many NFL observers believe Jones will be the Patriots quarterback of the future.

Mac Jones has impressive college stat

The Patriots could use the best of Jones with him under center.

“On offense, the arc of quarterback Mac Jones will likely dictate the ceiling of this team for the next handful of years,” ESPN’s Field Yates wrote. “Suffice it to say that he’ll have great infrastructure around him, as the best head coach in football in Bill Belichick and an offensive mastermind in offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels are always people to bet on.”

The rookie quarterback joined his teammates Tuesday. He will have to try really hard to meet everyone’s expectations. A lot of people compared Jones to Tom Brady. Maybe he will follow Brady’s footsteps and win seven Super Bowls. Impressive, right?

Let’s see what happens in 2021. The Patriots have several great options at quarterback. Jarrett Stidham will try his chances. Brian Hoyer will work with Jones. Belichick brought him back to teach the rookie. One thing stands for sure. Things can change overnight. Maybe Jones will go under center sooner than expected.
