Bill Belichick Gives Very Direct Answer to Question About Stephon Gilmore

The New England Patriots have several issues to handle at the moment. They have to pick a starting quarterback and they also lack a No.1 wide receiver. Head coach Bill Belichick has yet to make a decision on Stephon Gilmore. Well, he has received a lot of questions about the veteran cornerback, and his responses were pretty blunt.

The Patriots did a good job in the preseason. They defeated the Washington Football Team and also smashed the Philadelphia Eagles. Gilmore was nowhere to be seen. Reporters wanted to know more about the former Defensive Player of the Year, and Belichick provided a clear answer.

Phil Perry from NBC Boston reported that the Patriots plan to use their star cornerback as soon as possible.

“Belichick in response to @tomecurran‘s question on if the Patriots need to see Stephon Gilmore on the field before games start: ‘I know that Steph’s been working extremely hard… He’s doing everything he can do… When he’s ready to be out there, he’ll be out there.’”

Bill Belichick needs Stephon Gilmore on the field in 2021

Gilmore joined the team in the offseason, but didn’t see any action in practice and preseason games. Let’s not forget that he is still pushing towards a new deal with the team.

The 30-year-old has been looking for an extension for quite some time now. The soon-to-be free agent will earn $7 million. In other words, Gilmore is trying to get long-term security.

Talented Gilmore ended up on the physically-unable to perform list. He had a surgery in September to fix his quad. The 2020 NFL season ended a bit too early for Gilmore, and analysts weren’t really confident about his return.

The Patriots need Gilmore’s veteran experience. He is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, and the Patriots need every bit of his dominance to win games in the upcoming season. Gilmore has a key role on the roster and Belichick won’t let him go that easily. Of course, he won’t spend too much on an aging cornerback. Let’s see how this unfolds.
