Bill Belichick To Make a ‘Hard Decision’ at Quarterback Starter

The New England Patriots have four quarterback options at the moment. There were five quarterbacks on the field, but Jarrett Stidham underwent a surgery to fix his back. Head coach Bill Belichick has to make a decision on his next quarterback, but he did say Cam Newton was his starter.

It looks like the head coach is having a second thought. The 2015 NFL MVP may start games in September, but Jones will probably replace him at any given moment of the regular season.

When asked who will start games for the Patriots in the upcoming season, Belichick said Newton is his starter.

“We’ll take a look at the whole situation. I don’t think you want to evaluate players at any position off of one or two plays, or maybe days. From a consistency standpoint that’s always important, and obviously production. Hopefully, those things will be good and I’m sure it’ll be a hard decision, but we’ll see how it goes. Just let them play and try to do what we feel is best for the team based on their performance.

“Cam’s our starting quarterback. I think I said that.”

Bill Belichick follows the quarterback competition and has a starter

These comments may go against Belichick’s feelings about the whole situation. He says Newton will start games but would gladly give Jones the keys of his offense.

Jones and Newton look really good on the practice field. This adds fuel to the fire and Belichick is even more confused. Newton really likes the rookie.

“You never know when he’s really down on himself. You don’t really necessarily know when he’s up, either,” he said. “He’s real cool.”

Newton and Jones may compete for the top job, but they have nothing but respect for each other. The veteran is mentoring the rookie but admires his competitive spirit.

“Hopefully, I can learn from him and try to be like him in some ways and have fun with it,” Jones said. “We’re going to grow together, and we’re going to help each other win games, hopefully.”

“Ever since I’ve been here, there’s been a quarterback competition,” Newton added. “I think in essence, that’s the underlying ‘Patriot Way.’ Every position has competition there, and the quarterback position is no different.”
