Coach Bill Belichick Provides New Update On His Quarterback Decision

The New England Patriots will have their first regular season game in a few weeks. They will meet the Miami Dolphins in Week 1. Tom Brady and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming to Foxboro in Week 4. What does that mean? Head coach Bill Belichick has to make the right quarterback decision.

Cam Newton and Mac Jones compete for the No.1 position on the depth charts. Both players did a decent job in the preseason and some say Belichick should move on with his rookie. Others claim there is no such thing as competition in New England. Jones has just joined the team and he will need more time to learn the rulebook. He did a good job in training camp though. This gives him a good chance to see some real action in 2021.

Here’s another catch. Newton won’t join the Patriots until Thursday due to a misunderstanding with COVID-19 tests.

Coach B was loud and clear about Newton’s role with the team. He said that the returning starter would be his QB1 in 2021. Well, this confidence may be starting to waver as the first-rounder showed some insane skills in the preseason.

Belichick has yet to make a quarterback decision

The media keeps asking the same questions over and over again. Will Newton step in as a starter? When will Belichick make his final decision?

“I don’t have a time table on that. Can’t tell you,” Belichick said, per NFL Network insider Michael Giardi.

Jones went 13-of-19 for 146 yards in the 35-0 preseason win over the Philadelphia Eagles. He had an incredible week of practice.

Newton is out after missing a COVID-19 test, so Jones carried the vast majority of practice reps. I guess the rookie will make the most of this opportunity. He is trying to show everyone that Belichick made a good decision in the draft.

Jones took starting reps for the third straight day. He went 35-of-40 and completed 18 straight passes. Coaches and teammates were impressed. The rookie closed out his practice by leading the team on a 80-yard two-minute drill decorated with a TD.

Newton will return to practice Thursday. Is he a starter?
